David Reid exhibition launch
On the 10th of September 2009, the CI hosted a reception held in honour of David Reid, an Australian
artist who discovered the art and beauty of painting with Chinese ink
on Chinese paper. The main sponsor of the event was Macquarie Private Wealth.
More than 90 guests attended the reception, among which were representatives of the art world, personal friends of the
artist and people with a vested interest in
Chinese art in general.
Prof McWha, VC and President of the University of Adelaide gave a welcome speech followed by the Director of the Confucius Institute, Prof Mobo Gao. David Zhu, a graphic designer originally from Shanghai and close friend
of the artist then gave a very personal speech, focusing on the element
“East meets West”. For him, this is personified
in the
artist David Reid himself through his art work and strong interest in
Chinese art, reflected in their friendship and in the role of the
Confucius Institute (David Zhu designed the Confucius
Institute’s
logo).
Ms. Anne Warr, an Australian architect living and working in Shanghai since 2003, gave an engaging short presentation on Shanghai architecture. She is a personal friend of David Reid and included many of his paintings into her visual presentation which offered the guests an enticing introduction not only to special elements of Shanghai (Chinese) architecture, but also into some of David Reid’s paintings.

"Shanghai Landscapes" is organized by the Art & Heritage department of the University of Adelaide. It can be viewed at the Barr
Smith Library until October 18th, 2009 and the paintings are for sale (the CI is
happy to provide more information on request).
The Barr Smith library is open at the following times:
Monday to Thursday - 8 AM til
10 PM
Friday - 8 AM til 6 PM
Saturday and Sunday - 10 AM
