National Chinese Teachers Conference

On July 11 and 12, 2009, the Confucius Institute at The University of Adelaide hosted the 15th annual National Conference of the Chinese Language Teachers organized by the Chinese Language Teachers Federation of Australia (CLTFA). Over 175 primary, secondary and university Chinese language teachers from all over Australia, native-Chinese speakers and non-native speakers, attended the conference where topics such as “Perspectives on teacher background in Chinese language education” and “Catering for learner diversity in the classroom”,“Survival tips from a new teacher”, “Formative assessment in first language teaching”,”Bilingual immersion is the best option for Rudd’s 2020 vision” and “Assessing Intercultural language learning” were presented and discussed in multiple plenary sessions and 34 workshops over the two-days conference.

The event was opened by a colourful and dynamic lion dance, welcoming speeches by Ms. Jenny Jin, president of the Chinese Language Teachers Association South Australia (CLTASA) and Mr. James Wu, outgoing president of the Chinese Language Teachers Federation of Australia (CLTFA) and key note speakers Dr. Jane Orton from the Centre for Chinese Language Teacher Education at the University of Melbourne and Mr. Hieu Van Le, Lieutenant Governor of South Australia and Chairman of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission.

The conference was held in the University of Adelaide’s Napier building where numerous rooms had been booked for the event. Its excellent seminar and lecture rooms, all equipped with computers, beamers and white boards, were praised and greatly appreciated by the organisers and participants of the conference. The Confucius Institute hosted the event and supplied considerable HR and administrative support.

The Chinese Language Teachers Federation of Australia (CLTFA) considers the event to have been a great success and the Confucius Institute and the University of Adelaide certainly contributed to that success!
