Statue of Confucius

Welcome to the Delegates of Shandong Government visiting Adelaide

An Unveiling of the Statue of Confucius was held on July 1st by the Confucius Institute.

A delegation of the Provincial government of Shandong, China, headed by Mr Zhang Chuanlin, Vice Chairman of Shandong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference has visited the Confucius Institute at the University of Adelaide.

The Confucius Institute organized a ceremony to unveil the Confucius statue, donated by the people and government of Shandong.

Shanghai: City of Paradox

The CI, together with the Centre for Asian Studies organized a lunchtime public lecture titled:Shanghai: City of Paradox offered by Anne Warr, an Australian architect living and working in Shanghai since 2003. On Friday, 11th of September more than 40 people came to listen to Anne Warr talk about the architecture in Shanghai, its past and present, offering fascinating stories about not only buildings but also about people (mainly expats) who once lived in Shanghai. Many photographs and anecdotes made for a captivating presentation.

Ms. Anne Warr's book Shanghai Architecture is available for sale for $50. The CI is happy to provide more information on request.

David Reid exhibition launch -Shanghai Landscapes

On the 10th of September 2009, the CI hosted a reception held in honour of David Reid, an Australian artist who discovered the art and beauty of painting with Chinese ink on Chinese paper. The main sponsor of the event was Macquarie Private Wealth.

More than 90 guests attended the reception, among which were representatives of the art world, personal friends of the artist and people with a vested interest in Chinese art in general.

Confucius Institute Tour to China for South Australian Principals
July 8-18, 2009

As part of the Confucius Institutes' mission to promote the learning and teaching of Chinese in South Australian Schools, the Confucius Institute will be leading a small delegation of South Australian principals to visit China in July this year.

The tour is organised in conjunction with Shandong University, the Confucius Institute's partner institution in China and is designed for Principals of primary and high schools in South Australia whose schools are considering or currently teaching Mandarin Chinese.

The tour aims to give Principals an insight into Chinese life, language and culture. It will provide participants with first hand experience of the vibrant and dynamic country, which will play an ever-larger role in the lives of their students.

Principals will visit cultural, educational and economic sites in three cities: Shanghai, the economic capital of China; Jinan, a city of great cultural history and capital of Confucius' home province, Shandong; and Qingdao, a prosperous coastal city, formerly a German colony and now a seaside resort world famous for its beer.

This is the second year the Confucius Institute will be organising a study tour for school principals to experience china.

Inaugural Chinese Language Prizes Awarded

On May 7 the Confucius Institute held its Inaugural Chinese Prize Night for outstanding Mandarin language students of the University of Adelaide.

The Confucius Institute is proud to sponsor these prizes which aim to encourage Chinese language students to continue pursuing their interest in Chinese language and culture. The prizes are awarded to the students who demonstrate the highest achievement, commitment, enthusiasm and potential in their classes.

The keynote speaker at the award ceremony was Mr Sean Keenihan, a former student of Chinese at the University of Adelaide, and now President of the Australia China Business Council (SA). Mr Keenihan gave a thoroughly enjoyable and humorous account of learning the Chinese language in Beijing and Shanghai in the late 1980s, and how his year living in China changed his outlook on life, opening many doors for him both personally and professionally. "My career is ten years ahead because of my knowledge of Chinese and China" Mr Keenihan said.

Associate Professor Gregory McCarthy, Head of the School of Social Sciences, was delighted to present the prizes to the winners.

Merit awards were bestowed on the basis that the student showed by his/her academic performance to be a most outstanding student and in the opinion of the selection panel has demonstrated a high level of commitment, enthusiasm and potential for mastering the Chinese language.

Achievement awards were bestowed on the basis that the student demonstrated the highest level of commitment, enthusiasm and potential for mastering the Chinese language (in their year level).

The Advanced Chinese Prize was awarded to a student who has completed both Advanced Chinese A and Advanced Chinese B at the University of Adelaide and in the opinion of the selection panel has demonstrated excellent achievement and the highest level of commitment, enthusiasm and potential for mastering the Chinese language

Five of the eight students were able to attend the prize giving ceremony to personally receive their certificates. Each prize winner will also be given a cash prize with funds donated by the Confucius Institute.

The Confucius Institute would like to congratulate all of the winners on their outstanding achievement.

Chinese investment in the Australian resources industry

The Confucius Institute's new business program will be launched on Wednesday April 8 at the National Wine Centre.

With Chinese investment in the Australian resources industry gaining an ever higher public profile, the University of Adelaide's Confucius Institute and Institute for Mineral and Energy Resources present a forum which explores and examines the issues surrounding this important development.

The forum brings together a group of top experts in the field or most important commentators related to the topic to provide their analysis of current debates, from both the Australian and Chinese perspectives.

This is a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of one of the most topical and pressing issues facing Australia today.

Issues to be addressed include:

" The state of play with regards to the Australia/China Free Trade Agreement and implications for investment.

" What concerns the public most about Chinese investment in Australia: the consumer of resources as owner / the Chinese government as owner?

" Comparisons with other countries investing in the resources industry.

" The Chinese perspective on investing in the Australian resources industry.

China Briefings

This event is the first in a series of 'China Briefings' planned to provide up-to date knowledge of the most recent developments in China's political, economic and cultural spheres that are of most concern to the Australian public. Over coming months the program will bring top experts in the field to South Australian audiences to present speeches, talks or forums, free to the public.

Chinese expert to address Human Rights issues in Public Lecture

As part of his visit to the University of Adelaide, the President of Shandong University, Professor Xu Xianming, will deliver a public lecture on Human Rights in China. The lecture is Jointly presented by the Confucius Institute and the Adelaide Law School.

A graduate of Jilin and Wuhan universities, Professor Xu is one of China's most highly regarded and respected academics working in the area of human rights. He was appointed President of Shandong University in November last year after holding the position of President of Beijing's China University of Political Science and Law from 2001-2008. Professor Xu has received many national and provincial awards for his work, and serves in various capacities on many bodies both within China and internationally. These roles include Chinese Chairman of the World Congress of Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy and Chinese Chairman of the China-United States Joint Commission on Legal Education. He is also adjunct professor of Peking University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University and Jilin University.

Professor Xu's career has been dedicated to far-ranging research in areas such as legal thought in modern and contemporary China, principles of the rule of law, frontier issues of legal philosophy, theories on human rights, and constitutionalism and legal sociology. He is the author of more than 10 scholarly books and has also published over 30 series or textbooks on legal studies as the editor-in-chief.

The Confucius Institute welcomes all those who are interested in contemporary China to make the most of this unique opportunity to hear an insider's perspective on human rights in China today.

University takes greater role in school Chinese studies

The University of Adelaide's Confucius Institute will play a key role in Chinese language and cultural studies in South Australian Government schools, thanks to a new agreement between the University and the State Government.

Under the agreement, the Confucius Institute will provide input into the development and implementation of quality Chinese language and cultural studies programs for teachers, principals and school communities throughout the State.

The main focus for the Institute will be on assisting the Department of Education and Children's Services to further develop the language proficiency, cultural awareness and understanding, and language teaching methods of Chinese language teachers.

The Institute will provide a range of support to foster the study of Chinese in South Australian Government schools, including input on resources that teachers can use with students in the classroom.

The agreement has been signed by the Minister for Education and Children's Services, the Hon. Dr Jane Lomax-Smith, and the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Adelaide, Professor James McWha.

China Briefing 2/09

Join the Confucius Institute for the second event in the China Briefing series. This event will be of vital interest for all businesses with an interest in China.

The Confucius Institute's Chinese/Australian Cross-cultural Student Theatre Project

In 2009 the Confucius Institute is presenting a unique project aiming to put Australian students in touch with Chinese culture, and Chinese international students in Australia in touch with Australian culture.

The project will involve a series of writing and acting workshops which will culminate in a production to be staged in early October 2009.

By participating in a project such as this students will learn more about each others' cultures, and they will be able to share their understanding with other members of the South Australian community.

In order to get the project under way, the Confucius Institute is inviting interested students at the University of Adelaide to join us for an information night at 5.30pm, Tuesday March 10 at the Confucius Institute.
